31 Flavours

31 Flavours

What is more appropriate for my thirty-first week than to try all 31 flavours at Baskin Robbins? Spoiler Alert: Then I got there and found out there are thirty-two flavours. WHAT?!

Still, I was there and I’d cleansed my palette with a coffee and water for breakfast, so I was ready.

This was added to my list when I realised I had only ever ordered Maple Walnut ice cream at Baskin Robbins since I gave up cotton candy flavour when I was about ten. I never even tried anything else unless it was a bite of someone else’s. That’s kind of sad. Certainly, my tastes have changed since I was ten? Or maybe they haven’t. There was only one way to tell and that was to suffer* through trying every single flavour in one sitting. This was scientific folks. Don’t let the laughs fool you, there was serious debate and discussion and it was not as easy to narrow down as one might think. We were there more than two hours. Not lying.

Here are my top recommendations. Overall: Caramel and chocolate are perfect for ice cream with mocha a serious contender. Peanuts and peanut butter should never be in ice cream. (The numbers are the mark I gave each flavour out of 10)

7. Citrus Twist Ice
7.5. Chocolate Chip
8. Vanilla
8. World Class Chocolate
8. Maple Walnut
8. Chocolate
9. Chocolate Mousse Royale
9. Gold Medal Ribbon
9. Caramel Macchiato
10. Caramel Turtle Truffle

Michele’s top 10. Overall: Cream and fruit should never mix and peanut butter is the bomb. If she’s going to have that many calories in one sitting it has to be a 10. In fact, she will forego ice cream if her favourite flavour is not there. I found that unbelievable and admire** her willpower. I would suffer through almost any ice cream if the choice was to have water for dessert instead.

6. Gold Medal Ribbon
6.5. Caramel Macchiato
7. Citrus Twist Ice
7. Vanilla
7. Chocolate Mousse Royale
7.5. Chocolate Chip
8. Chocolate
8. Maple Walnut
9. World Class Chocolate
10. Chocolate Peanut Butter

Our combined favourites were:

6.5. Caramel Turtle Truffle
6.5. Chocolate Chip
7. Citrus Twist Ice
7.25. Caramel Macchiato
7.5. Vanilla
7.5. Gold Medal Ribbon
8. Chocolate Mousse Royale
8. Maple Walnut
8.25. Chocolate
8.5. World Class Chocolate

Unless you are ten years old or less, stay away from these offerings that are far too sweet:

0. Blue Raspberry
0. Maui Brownie
0. Cotton Candy
0. Bubble Gum

Flavours we just couldn’t recommend to anyone:

0. Love Potion 31
0. Boston Cream Pie
0. Strawberry Cheesecake
0. Rum Raisin

What we learned is there is a flavour for everyone. I know, deep stuff. I’m flummoxed that Strawberry Cheesecake has been around for more than 50 years. In fact, Maha, the staff person in the video, loves Strawberry Cheesecake. Don’t worry, I took her off my Christmas list to punish her 🙂 I don’t think she was all that upset about it and I am not sure she understands I am serious. Console her if you are ever at the Bayview Baskin Robbins, please.

Now we’ve done the hard work, you do the easy work and tell me what is your favourite type of ice cream?

* there was no suffering in the making of this video. ** admire or riducule same/same.

  1. Thanks to you I only just realized how unacceptably long it’s been since I had ice cream at Baskin Robbins. This must be remedied.

    Also, PRALINES ‘N CREAM FOREVAAAAAAAAAAAAH.

  2. I used to like Strawberry Cheesecake, but it’s probably too sweet for me now, so I always go for a Jamocha milkshake. Milkshakes are really my preference: no worries about them melting over my hand.
From the store I used to get Ben & Jerry’s Karamel Sutra, but had to stop because it disappeared too quickly. Among the classics it’s a tossup between pralines & cream and mint chocolate chip.

    • The Jamocha in a milkshake does sound good. It didn’t have much flavour (compared to the 31 others), but I can see its redeeming qualities in a shake. I can’t buy ice cream for the disappearing reason too. Karamel Sutra… that sounds like something I should try!

  3. Thanks for doing the work for us! Stopped eating ice cream years ago when I (mostly) gave up dairy, but I’d do the pb & chocolate, anything caramely, and probably the lime. Did you try the yogurts?

    • We did try the yogurts, the Limey one was my favourite. The others were far too sweet. I don’t eat as much ice cream as I used to after making it once. This happened with alfredo sauce too… stick with me. Once I realized how much fat there was in what I was eating, I grossed myself out to the point that I was ‘off’ them both for years. Alfredo I can live without. Ice cream, I suffer through 🙂

  4. I get the Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia & Phish Food. I really don’t like the idea of cracking a tooth on a hunk of frozen chocolate, so let me know if anyone has a chocolate ice cream with Marshmallows and Caramel and Fudge. I can feel the diabetic coma starting already. Since there were 32 flavors, you could go back again next week (to a different store) and do it again! There’s no longer a 31 Flavors near where I live, which is just as well, as I don’t need the temptation. How did you all feel after 31 (32) pretty full spoons full of pure sugar. And why don’t you ever bring Mister to the fun things?

    • I’m not a fan of the marshmallows in my ice cream, so thankfully rocky road was the only one I had to suffer through. I was so thirsty for the rest of the day trying to process all that sugar. I did wear elastic waist pants too to deal with the bloating 🙂 As for week 32, I think I’ll get an insulin shot.

  5. I. Can’t. Do. It. Can’t! I’ve been spoiled by small dairies that make their own ice cream. And it’s soured me to the commercial type:). I rarely have it, but when I do, it’s of the small-batch variety. Yum!

    • My favourite ice cream is Caramel Snapping Turtle by Kawartha Dairies which I can’t find where I live, only north of me. Kawartha doesn’t have 31 flavours and it was week 31. A girl’s gotta do…

  6. How did you not get an ice cream headache during this one? I’ve found that when I was younger I liked the busier ice creams, like Rocky Road, now I’m more a fan of the simpler tastes. Chocolate chip is currently my favorite.
