Durien, Bitter Melon, and Banana Flowers, Oh My

In this week’s instalment of 50 weeks to 50, I headed out to the Asian Grocery store. I was looking for a laundry list of items my ‘friends’ suggested on facebook like Haggis, Haggis, and more Haggis. But thankfully, there were just strange fruits and veggies to discover. Shucks.

My advice… durien’t run out to get a durien unless you can try it outside. It smells like a men’s hockey bag. And, that is being kind.

  1. You are SO way more adventurous that I could ever be. But I thought the “vegetable” was the one that looked like unpeeled celery, and not the one with the spikes. I guess I’ll be sticking with the tried and true, unless someone sneaks something exotic into my food.
    I noticed that your “friends” have some unusual ideas about your 50 for 50 – have any of them tried these things with you (I do remember friends who weld)?

  3. I’m both impressed and envious that you’ve now tried durian (I’ve always seen it spelled with an ‘a’ instead of an ‘e’, go figure). It’s supposed to be one of those things that people either love or hate–like cilantro–but it sounds like you’ve got a slightly more nuanced feeling about it.
    Also I think bitter melon is supposed to be cooked. In fact I think it’s only supposed to be an ingredient used to enhance other flavors, like bay leaves or salt.

  4. Way braver than I am! I just started eating guacamole at 49. I’m not sure that “harmless” and “spikes” should ever be used in the same sentence.
