Sinking to New Depths

Sinking to New Depths

Spoiler Alert: I suck at scuba.

Not just kind of bad, I mean panic attack bad. I can dive to the bottom of our lake (6 feet) and not worry about my ears and be just fine. Put me in a regulator and I couldn’t get into one foot of water before freaking that my ears were exploding.

But here’s the thing… I think I’ll try it again. Not because I can’t stand failing, even though that is an excellent and perfectly logical reason. No, it is because the first scuba night was a taste of what is required and I think I am more of a, “Gimme the whole damn meal and then I’ll decide if I like it” kind of girl. I didn’t have all the information because they couldn’t fit that into three hours.

As an aside, there was a racoon in the scuba video. Last I checked racoons were more of a garbage pail creature. I know the oceans are polluted, so maybe it was a silent commentary, however, I think I’d be more inclined to see a fish than a racoon. But hey, I’ve never scuba’d in the wild so I could be wrong.

Scuba for me is a to be continued… but with all I am trying to get done before my 50th birthday*, I might have to beach this for now. I have looked into Mister and I doing the full certification course and it is entirely possible we will spend a weekend learning to dive before we go away at Christmas. I’ll keep you posted.

*For those of you new here… I am trying to learn fifty new things this year before I turn fifty. That is why the time crunch is real. Please stick around, there are 27 weeks to come.

  1. Breathing is very important to me. I can understand your fear of not being able to do it under water. Many years ago I tried snorkeling and wound up breathing at the wrong time. Scuba “looks” easier, but I’m in no hurry to try it. Good for you. You don’t have to love every single one of your ’50 to 50′, but this looks like one that would take a good long time to get used to. But again, you have way more nerve than I do!

    • I love snorkelling and have no problem with the mask or breathing with that gear on. I can even dive down with the snorkel, blow the water out and continue without missing a beat. I expected to LOVE scuba and take to it like a fish IN water. But for some reason, scuba felt different (the reason was all in my head). Even when I was at the surface like I was snorkelling, I panicked. I started hyperventilating and just couldn’t stop. Hey, but I tried and I didn’t end up in the emergency room, so all is good. 🙂

  2. Oh my. Seeing my own name (Kristine) on a scuba tank was enough to send me into fits:). No thank you! You’re a brave girl …

  3. It’s admirable that you tried and that you’re even considering diving in for another try some time in the future. It really does look like a lot of fun. When I was a kid I wanted to be a marine biologist in part because I thought it would be cool to have a job where scuba diving was an essential part–and yet I’ve never tried it. Go figure.
