The Dead Series: The Day I Had a Stroke

The Dead Series: The Day I Had a Stroke

So I alluded to being in emergency again just before Christmas… Here’s the story and why I gave up Diet Coke for a New Year’s resolution. Stupid aspartame linked to strokes and migraines in some obscure lab in the middle of Buttfuck nowhere but I’m doing it anyway. Stop nagging now Mom!

  1. I am so glad you are ok. Aspartame and sucralose both give me migraines!! I discovered early in pregnancy, when I absolutelycouldnteatsugarbarf and started drinking diet drinks that I was getting serious headaches. Thought it was just a pregnancy thing until I went off the sucralose-filled water too, and voila! No more migraines. I am so glad you are ok!! <3 <3 <3

    • Red wine, stress and pregnancy are my biggest triggers 🙂 I had a once-a-day diet coke habit and it never seemed to trigger a migraine. Still, I will give it up because the family nagging is driving me crazy!… more crazy.

  2. Phew! Glad all is ok. Great haircut!

  3. Kris! You silly girl. Glad you are ok. Diet Coke does bad things to me too. Stick with full throttle sugar! Just kidding… We’ll sort of.

  4. I’m glad it wasn’t a stroke but sorry it was a migraine. If red wine is one of your triggers it may be the sulfites. Or sulfates. Something with sulfur in it. Anyway aspartame is something you should give up because it sounds like an evil Sumerian goddess, but red wine is the gift of a good Sumerian goddess so if at all possible you shouldn’t have to give it up.
Sometimes it’s difficult to enjoy life when you have to give up some of the things that make life worth living but you’re strong and smart enough to straddle that line.

  5. I’m so glad that you didn’t actually have a stroke! But why were you so stubborn?! A medical professional refuses to talk to you, tells you to get medical care immediately and you continue to laugh it off? What’s up with that, girl? I know you’re sick of the E.R. but…. It’s so strange that they actually diagnosed you with a stroke in the E.R. after running all of those tests, too. Maybe they need to review the signs of stroke.

I’m glad you got a little bit of downtime, but imagine that it wasn’t really all that relaxing since you thought you’d just had a major medical crisis. Good luck continuing to detox from the diet coke, and get back to enjoying your perfect brain—and sharing it with us—soon. xoxo

  6. Jeez girl! First off, my husband has had a number of stokes & TIA’s and when you tell them in the ER, they take you immediately! Also, I was told when I was diagnosed as a diabetic that I should NOT drink anything with “artificial” sugar – any type. That if I was really craving something sweet, to drink the real thing, but to dilute it with water (carbonated or otherwise). It was pretty good information. You get the flavor (albeit weak), but it’s more satisfying than a migraine/stroke/coma. Also, as far as wine goes – sulfites/sulfates are a royal bitch. I have trouble breathing after consuming. But again, make a wine cooler/spritzer and you have (less) wine plus something to cut it with. You learn to make adjustments whenever your body says enough is enough! I’m so glad your O.K. – quit scaring us like this! Most of your ER stories wind up being funny. This one – not so much (or at all)!

    • Don’t worry about me! Today I discovered flavoured San Pellegrino and that seemed to do the trick. No fake sugar and a bit of fizz. More importantly–How is your husband? That must be so scary for you and your family. I am glad you treat his attacks more seriously than I did mine. I certainly learned a lesson and thankfully it wasn’t the hard way. You’d think from a girl who volunteers every year for the Heart & Stroke Association that I might know a bit more. Give yourself a hug for me and one for your husband too. You are both why I spend February out in the cold collecting money!

      • Well, as they say – hindsight is 20/20. My husband’s first stroke was about 15 years ago, and he didn’t mention it for 2 full days! He finally went to a doctor who called an ambulance for the hospital NEXT DOOR! So now we don’t hesitate when in doubt. With all that has happened, he does now have ‘stroke induced dementia’. He still gets around pretty well, but his memory is taking a dive. Hopefully it stays where it is for several more years (he just lost 2 brothers to Alzheimer’s and dementia). (Finger’s crossed). I’ll take the hug, but I might keep his for myself as well!

  7. So I have had a major diet coke habit my whole life. I have been working hard in the past month to get it down to just one diet coke a day (semi-successfully). The idea of banishing diet coke completely gives me the heebie jeebies.
